MOST POPULAR SEARCH ENGINES IN CHINA – 2025

Explore China's top search engines

Despite the rising importance of social search in China, traditional search engines still play a crucial role in influencing local purchasing behaviors. Among nearly 1.1 billion (1,099.67 million) internet users in China, 75% use search engines to find and purchase products and services, driving the highest consumer market in the world. However, search engines in China are unlike those anywhere else in the world.

With Google not being present, Baidu has emerged as the leading local search engine, continually competing with the international giant Bing for user loyalty and market share.

In this article, we will introduce the most popular search engines in China and how to connect with the country’s vast audience.

What is the most popular search engine in China?

Baidu is the most popular search engine in China, holding a market share of 54.36% as of November 2024. It is often referred to as “China’s Google.” Baidu offers various features, including search, maps, news, and translation. It also has some unique capabilities, such as the ability to search for information using Chinese dialects.

Bing is the #2 most popular search engine in China, with a market share of 30.29% across all devices.

Due to changes in Baidu’s search ecosystem, its market share has gradually declined over the past 12 months, dropping nearly 15 percentage points from 68.52% in November last year. In contrast, Bing’s market share has increased by nearly 20 percentage points, rising from 11.5% in November last year.

But despite Baidu’s overall market dominance, the breakdown by desktop and mobile tells a different story.

 • Bing holds a market share of 50.41% among desktop users in China. After adding AI search capabilities in March 2024, Bing’s market share has steadily increased. Following the addition of AI features, searches now produce improved Knowledge Cards, engaging AI-generated Stories, and richer search results.
 • Interestingly, Baidu’s desktop market share is only 30.01%.

3. CHINA’S SEARCH ENGINE MARKET SHARE (MOBILE)

 • Bing 18.60%
 • YANDEX 4.54%

Observing the mobile sector:

 • Baidu dominates the mobile search market with a share of 67.99%.
 • In second place is Bing, with a mobile market share of 18.60%, steadily increasing from just 5.72% in March 2024.

Therefore, across all devices, Baidu and Bing are the two most popular search engines in China, providing brands with unparalleled opportunities to reach the thriving internet population in China, which is eager for content and technology.

For international brands looking to enter the Chinese market, investing in Bing is certainly worthwhile, but it is also essential to consider Baidu, the search engine that local users are more familiar with.

To help you tap into this substantial market potential, let’s explore the latest trends, market shares, and similarities and differences between Baidu and Bing.

BAIDU VS BING: INTRODUCTION TO THE MOST POPULAR SEARCH ENGINES IN CHINA

WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT CHINA’S SEARCH MARKET?

China has developed its own platforms that understand unique Chinese language, culture, and search intent. Localizing content for Chinese platforms is critical to connecting with Chinese users—knowing and actioning upon how and why they search will get you found.

Despite the impact of Bing, a global search engine, the local giant Baidu remains strong. The platform provides users with valuable information through various channels, including websites, news, images, videos, and blogs.

Baidu even has its own properties, such as Baidu Baike (the Chinese answer to Wikipedia), Baidu Baijiahao (Baidu’s online publishing platform for self-media), Baidu Images for visual search, and more.

In comparison, Bing is more responsive to changes in website content and can deliver a more diverse and valuable range of web results to users, which is a key reason for its rising market share. Additionally, Bing also provides high-quality content from Baidu, such as Baidu Baike, which is well-received by users.

However, Bing’s search ecosystem is undergoing continuous adjustments. Observing trends over the past 12 months, the proportion of advertisement results on the Bing CN homepage search results is on the rise, which has had a negative impact on user experience.

TOP SEARCH ENGINES IN CHINA: RECENT TRENDS & PAST DATA

SEARCH ENGINE MARKET SHARE IN CHINA

Since 2021, Baidu’s market share on desktop has been on a continuous downtrend, dropping sharply from 57.96% to 35.93% in 2022 alone.

This downward trend is partly due to Bing challenging Baidu’s dominant position in the search engine market. During this period, Bing underwent multiple version updates, focusing on visual upgrades, feature enhancements, and improvements in user experience, making it more attractive to users.

As concerns about the Baidu search experience have emerged, Bing’s market share has significantly increased from 18.02% in 2021 to 50.41% in 2024. In March 2024, Bing announced the addition of AI Q&A features to its search results in Bing China, which may also be a factor contributing to its rising popularity.

TOP SEARCH ENGINES IN CHINA: BAIDU VS Bing

BAIDU VS BING: SERP RANKINGS

Baidu tends to display results that are more self-referential on its SERP, while Bing’s search results are more diverse.

For example, when searching for “旅游景点” (tourist attractions) on Baidu and Bing, Baidu Maps appears at the top of Baidu’s SERP, while the first organic search result on Bing is ctrip.com.

At the same time, Baidu’s Baijiahao content occupies multiple positions on its SERP. For instance, the last four search results on the first SERP for the query “tourist attractions” are all from Baijiahao.

Since Bing also recognizes that Baidu Baike provides high-quality content, the entries from Baidu Baike can occupy prominent positions in Bing’s search results for certain keywords.

BAIDU VS BING: SERP STRUCTURE

To maximize page load speed and improve user experience, both Baidu and Bing display up to 10 organic results per page by default.

The screenshot below highlights how the SERPs for both search engines are structured:

 • Organic search results, which are similar across both SERPs, are outlined in red
 • Paid search ads are outlined in green
 • Vertical search results (based on topic, media type, and content genre) are outlined in blue
 • Results from Baidu- and Bing-owned properties like Baidu Baike, Bing Maps etc., are outlined in purple

Note: Baidu lets users change the default settings to display up to 50 results on the SERP. But this customizability is currently not available on Bing.

BAIDU VS BING: SERP SNIPPETS

On both SERPs, organic results generally feature a title, followed by a simple snippet with information about that page’s content, then the landing page URL or the name of its website/Baidu Baijiahao (or publisher number).

In some cases, there is a feature image to the left of the meta description.

Baidu and Bing have similar organic listings on their SERPs. On both, the search term (the example below shows “Swarovski” as the search term) is in red to highlight the relevance of the page’s content to the search query.

Search results from officially verified websites on Baidu display an “official” (“官方”) icon in blue after the title tag. Websites that have not been verified by the relevant search engine will not have this icon. Bing does not have such certification, but websites can achieve rich media results by adding Schema Markup code, making their official sites more prominent.

BAIDU VS bing: PAID SEARCH DISPLAY

Both Baidu and Bing display advertisement results on their SERPs, with ads appearing at the top, bottom, and possibly interspersed within the organic search results.

Advertisement results must have an ad label, but Bing’s ads are relatively harder for users to notice. On certain search result pages with a large number of ads, Bing may have fewer than 10 organic search results, whereas Baidu typically has at least 9 organic search results.

WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR SEARCH ENGINE IN CHINA?

Baidu is the largest search engine in China, with a market share of 54.36%. Bing is the second-ranked search engine in China, holding a market share of 30.29%.

However, as Baidu and Bing continue to integrate organic search results and paid search results in their SERPs, users who prefer a simpler search experience may find themselves toggling between these two search engines while looking forward to a new search engine that offers straightforward search results.

Ultimately, to succeed in China, it is essential to localize for Chinese users, understand how Baidu and Bing interpret SEO best practices, and incorporate that understanding into an overall SEO strategy.

Where is the Travel Demand? Discover Mainland China’s Top 3 Travel Topics for 2021

Baidu Search - Outrank your competitors for travel trends in China

Although leisure travel remains dormant due to the pandemic, that hasn’t deterred the far and wide demand for travel content in Mainland China—spurred by the rapid recovery of its domestic tourism since the second half of 2020.

Due to global travel restrictions, the regular sight of Mainland Chinese tourists on international holiday has become a distant memory. However, what transpired was the revival of China’s domestic tourism market, with a path to recovery distinctly characterized by a zero-case-first strategy, efficient vaccine rollouts, and resurgent traveler confidence.

Since May last year, China’s demand for local excursions, domestic short- and long-haul journeys, and domestic business trips has mirrored pre-pandemic levels of domestic travel. In fact, over 30% of the population—a staggering 425 million people—travelled across the country during the ‘Golden Week’ holiday in October 2020.

So, to understand what drives demand for domestic tourism in Mainland China, let’s examine the top 3 travel topics that people are searching for on Baidu—China’s #1 search engine with 222+ million active users:

 1. 旅游租车 (tourist car rentals)
 2. 旅游景点 (tourist attractions)
 3. 旅游攻略 (travelling guidelines)

1. Top 3 travel search terms on Baidu (April 2020)

Top 3 travel search terms on Baidu (April 2020)

Similar to our research on travel search trends in Hong Kong and Singapore, we used Dragon Metrics—an all-in-one global SEO research tool—to understand popular search terms specific to Mainland China and how you can rank for them on Baidu.

Mainland China Travel Search Trend 1: “旅游租车” (Tourist Car Rentals)

Monthly Search Volume: “旅游租车”

When Mainland China’s pandemic situation stabilized in April 2020, monthly search volume (MSV) for “旅游租车” bounced back—and has remained high ever since. It spiked significantly in October and peaked at 66,800 searches in November, most of which were desktop searches.

The volume of organic mobile searches increased more than tenfold between March and November 2020. Regardless, the overwhelming volume of desktop versus mobile searches is still expected since people with information needs generally favor computers for doing research, such as finding the best deal for a car rental.

2. Monthly search volumes for “旅游租车” on Baidu

Top 10 Search Results: “旅游租车

Dragon Metrics lists the sites currently occupying the top 10 positions on the SERP for any keyword, alongside other SEO ranking metrics, including:

 • Page authority (PA)—out of 100
 • Domain authority (DA)—out of 100
 • Backlink volume for each domain

Diving into the competitive analysis for “旅游租车”, let’s examine which sites populate the Baidu SERP for this search term.

3. Dragon Metrics - Top 10 SERP results for“旅游租车”

Dragon Metrics: Top 10 SERP results for“旅游租车”

As you can see above, the top 10 search results for “旅游租车” comprise mostly official websites of car rental companies, online travel agencies (OTAs), and news outlets. Indeed, in the absence of overseas travel, most Chinese residents turned to self-guided tours or road trips, which is widely viewed as safer and more acceptable than rail or flights.

Most of these sites have varying PAs (between 8 to 70) and DAs (between 1 to 92), highlighting the clutter of both small and large websites on the SERP. However, the websites that have both low PA and low DA scores, as well as weak backlink profiles, are predominantly car rental companies. As such, outranking them for “旅游租车” may not be too difficult if you promote car rentals with engaging content that makes price and convenience the primary selling points.

Mainland China Travel Search Trend 2: “旅游景点” (tourist attractions)

Monthly Search Volume: “旅游景点

MSVs for “旅游景点” fluctuated over the past 12 months, with June 2020 recording the lowest volume, which then gradually recovered and peaked at 248,600 searches in September—before plummeting to lower levels again.

Unlike for “旅游租车”, considerably more people searched for “旅游景点” on mobile. This is expected since people who search “旅游景点”, especially on mobile, seek travel inspiration—liking, commenting, and engaging with travel content as a means to dream of that next perfect getaway.

Thus, given that smartphones conveniently let you search anywhere and anytime, the search intent for “旅游景点” is likely spontaneous.

Amidst rising mobile searches and shortening attention spans, ensure you optimize your travel content for mobile to increase traffic, customer retention, and ultimately conversions.

Top 10 Search Results: “旅游景点

Dragon Metrics: Top 10 SERP results for “旅游景点”

The top 10 SERP results for “旅游景点” comprises primarily OTAs providing guidelines for popular tourist attractions, particularly in Shandong and Guangdong provinces.

Most of the websites have moderate PAs (23 to 56) and varying DAs (2 to 88), suggesting that it may not be too challenging to rank above these sites for “旅游景点” if you create high-value content about the guidelines for visiting the most sought-after attractions in Mainland China.

Mainland China Travel Search Trend 3: “旅游攻略” (travelling guideline)

Monthly Search Volume: “旅游攻略

MSVs for “旅游攻略” on Baidu peaked at 76,900 searches in March 2020—during the commotion of Mainland China’s border closures. MSVs for the term then hovered just below that level for half a year before plummeting to 22,100 searches in January 2021 .

Much like for “旅游景点”, mobile searches for “旅游攻略” outnumbered desktop searches. With that said, the proportion of mobile searches for this term is not as high as it is for “旅游景点”.

6. Monthly search volumes for “旅游攻略” on Baidu

Monthly search volumes for “旅游攻略” on Baidu

Top 10 Search Results: “旅游攻略

Dragon Metrics: Top 10 SERP results for “旅游攻略”

The top 10 search results for “旅游攻略” majorly feature travel guidelines from OTAs for different places within Mainland China as well as for overseas countries.

Most of these sites have moderate PAs (23 to 64) and varying DAs (1 to 87), leaving ample room to outrank them by creating well-researched content that covers travel guidelines for destinations looking to re-open their borders with Mainland China in the near-future.

How To Rank for the Right Travel Keyword

After you’ve identified target travel keywords from your competitive analysis, Dragon Metrics’ keyword research tool can help prioritize the keywords for which you have the best likelihood of gaining traffic. The platform uses these metrics in its assessment:

 • Keyword difficulty

Keyword difficulty measures the backlink strength of sites ranked on page 1 of the SERP and reveals how many backlinks it takes to rank in the top 10 results.

 • Organic CTR

Organic CTR measures how much of page 1 is made up of ads, rich results, and various SERP features. This illuminates the percentage of clicks that go to organic results and helps you de-prioritize keywords that generate results below the fold.

 • Priority

Priority is an aggregate score—made up of search volume, keyword difficulty, and organic CTR—that reveals a keyword’s organic traffic potential. Lower keyword difficulty and higher search volume and organic CTR make for a higher priority score.

Dragon Metrics: Keyword overview for 旅游租车

Dragon Metrics: Keyword overview for “旅游景点”

10. Dragon Metrics - Keyword overview for “旅游攻略”

Dragon Metrics: Keyword overview for “旅游攻略”

Out of the three keywords, “旅游景点” (tourist attractions) exhibited the lowest organic difficulty at 39%, making it the easiest to rank for with the fewest quality backlinks. “旅游租车” (tourist car rentals) and “旅游攻略” (travelling guidelines) had moderate organic difficulties at 42% and 51% respectively.

“旅游攻略” has the highest organic CTR at 95%, indicating that incoming traffic for sites on its SERP is mostly organic and not directed from paid ads. The other two terms both shared moderate CTRs.

Altogether, “旅游租车” (tourist car rentals) had the highest priority score at 68, followed by “旅游景点” (tourist attractions) at 65, and “旅游攻略” (travelling guidelines) at 57.

As such, given its lower keyword difficulty, “旅游租车” (tourist car rentals) can be prioritized in your SEO to outrank SERP competitors for travel search terms in 2021.

To this end, Dragon Metrics’ priority score can efficiently evaluate the target keyword(s) for which you have the best likelihood of ranking highest.

***

Travel demand looked set to dwindle when virtually the entire world’s borders shut down in 2020—but that was not the case in China. Instead of storing away their backpacks and suitcases, Chinese people dashed online to research, interact, and book their perfect domestic getaway.

Our findings on Dragon Metrics showed that travel remained domestic within Mainland China, with consistently high search volumes for content about homegrown activities—like road trips and local attractions—in the last 12 months.

With the prospect of overseas travel returning to the fray in 2021, our insatiable appetite for travel content will only grow over time.

How to Optimize .cn Domain Migration (in post-pandemic China)

China’s economy is gradually recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. According to tourism market data from this year’s Golden Week holiday (released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism), China saw 637 million domestic tourists who contributed RMB ¥466.56 billion in tourism revenue.

This shows great potential in China’s domestic tourism market and a strong opportunity for brands to use SEO to reach their target markets in China—whether travel-related or not, as the entire economy is in recovery mode.

In this article, we give a step-by-step guide on how to optimize your .cn domain migration for better speed, ranking, and authority on China’s search engines and within China’s massive online marketplace.

Domains Hosted in China

Many global brands have Chinese sites. They are presented as either an additional category within their global sites—for example: https://www.microsoft.com/zh-cn—or they have a separate CN domain—like: https://www.apple.com.cn/, https://www.amazon.cn/, and https://www.ikea.cn/.

The Chinese government requires CN domains to be hosted in China. There are many benefits of this:

 • Domestic servers can be used
 • Internet speed is faster (which positively affects website indexation and ranking)
 • Domestic website filing also makes the site look more professional and trustworthy.

As such, we advise brands to transition their sites from additional categories within their global sites to be CN domains hosted in China.

This will involve website migration, which brings significant SEO considerations and consequences as old URL pages must be transitioned to new, server technical issues must be navigated, CMS template settings must be optimized and more.

The following step-by-step instructions will help you maximize SEO value during your site migration to a CN domain and ultimately rank higher on China’s search engines.

.cn Domain Migration Step 1: Crawl your site and save data before migration

Before migration, you need to back up your site data. You can crawl your website with a tool like Screaming Frog and save the crawl data for later. You should also save a copy of all pages: URLs, page titles, meta data, headers, redirects, broken links, etc.

Pages cannot be crawled if they cannot be found on your website due to robots.txt or other indexation issues. Fix these pages if you’d like them to be crawled and included in your migrated site.

During migration, if you find any orphan pages, make sure you link them somewhere, so that they are not stand-alone, which makes it difficult for crawlers to navigate to and from.

Pro-Tip: Keep a copy of the crawl data for a few months, just in case you need it after the new site has gone live.

.cn Domain Migration Step 2: Establish a redirect map from old to new webpages

This is the most crucial step of the site migration. Search engines need explicit instructions on the change of URL pages. Based on the content of your pages, you should map every URL on your existing site to a corresponding URL on the new site. You should also have a spreadsheet that lists every old and new URL.

 • Legacy site URL –> new site URL

Example of a Redirect Map

You will use this document to apply 301 permanent redirects on all of the old pages, so that they will send both users and search engines to the new pages.

Pro-Tip: Make sure you are not using 302 temporary redirects, which will tell search engines that you want to keep all rankings and links of the old pages and only want to send traffic to the new pages for a short period of time. Do note that this process is important during migration.

.cn Domain Migration Step 3: Create your XML sitemap and submit to webmaster tools

Submitting an XML sitemap will help Baidu and other search engines discover the pages of your new website. You can also use the XML sitemap to provide other information about your website, such as timestamp of the latest update, the frequency of sitemap updates, and more. Be sure to make all changes to the sitemap quickly, so that search engines can promptly start indexing the new URLs.

Example of an XML Sitemap Submission

Pro-Tip: The file format for the sitemap should be .txt or .xml. Each file can contain up to 50,000 URLs, and the file size must be less than 10MB. Do not submit an indexed sitemap as Baidu does not support it.

.cn Domain Migration Step 3: Use site migration assistance from Baidu Webmaster Tools

Baidu Webmaster Tools will notify Baidu when you’ve moved to a new domain or shuffled content around your site using the site migration tool. The tool supports three types of migrations:

Change of Domain

This method is only suitable for a change in a site’s domain name, and there are no changes to the site architecture. For example: from [www.a.com] to [www.a.cn].

URL Pairing

This is suitable for webmasters who have encountered updates to a specific set of URLs that can’t be described by the above two methods. You can submit a document of updated URLs to Baidu.

Document Format

 • 2 URLs per row, the first URL being the old URL, and the second URL being the new URL.
 • 2 URLs are separated by a space
 • You can upload as many as 50,000 pairs of URLs per document or 2,000 pairs of URLs by directly inputting them to the text box.

Rule Migration

This is for structural updates with no changes to the root domains. For example: [ww.a.com/a] to [www.a.com/b] or [www.a.com/c] to [c.a.com].

The Three Migration Types

For the remainder of this tutorial, we will cover change of domain (站点改版) and URL pairing (新旧URL对), because these are the two situations that might occur during your .cn domain migration:

 1. If only your domain name needs to be changed while the URL structure will remain unchanged, then change of domain applies, and you can jump to step 4a.
 2. If there is to be a change in your domain and URL structure, then URL pairing applies, and you can jump to step 4b.

.cn Domain Migration Step 4a: Change of Domain Tool

Use Baidu’s domain change tool to take the following actions:

 • Input old site’s domain name.
 • Input new site’s domain name.
 • Submit.

Change of Domain Tool

.cn Domain Migration Step 4a: URL Pairing Tool

Use Baidu’s URL pairing tool to take the following actions:

 • Input old site’s domain name.
 • Input new site’s domain name.
 • Upload URL pairing document or paste pairs of URLs.
 • Browse files.
 • Submit.

URL Pairing Tool

Pro-Tips

 • Both old and new websites must be verified in Baidu Webmaster Tools.
 • Ensure your old site has been redirected to the new site using 301 permanent redirects.
 • Once the migration is complete, do not delete your redirection files immediately. In case of verification failure, please keep the redirection files for at least three months.

***

After completing your site migration, you need to conduct a site audit for the new website to identify any problems that may have occurred during the migration process.

Before moving to your new domain, it’s important that you monitor and benchmark keyword rankings and organic search traffic, so that you can see the impact of your site migration. However, do note that some volatility and fluctuations are expected in the initial stage of your site migration. But following the steps above will minimize any negative effects of your .cn site migration on your SEO, particularly as economies and brands move from crisis into recovery and adaptation mode.

2 Easy Steps to Identify Baidu Spiders https://www.theegg.com/seo/china/2-easy-steps-to-identify-baidu-spiders/ Tue, 24 Mar 2020 01:43:20 +0000 https://www.theegg.com/?p=30760 The post 2 Easy Steps to Identify Baidu Spiders appeared first on The Egg.

]]>

Multiple spiders crawling a site increases server burden.

To improve accessibility, sites in China can identify and allow spiders from only Baidu–China’s biggest search engine–and block spiders from smaller search engines.

Here are 2 easy steps to identify Baidu spiders.

Step 1: Check the user agent

A spider is not from Baidu if its user agent is not in the list below. The UA of Baidu’s spiders fall into 3 categories: mobile, desktop, and application.

Baidu Mobile UA

Mozilla/5.0(Linux;u;Android 4.2.2;zh-cn;) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML,like Gecko)Version/5.1 Mobile Safari/10600.6.3 (compatible; Baiduspider/2.0;+http://www.baidu.com/search/spider.html)

Or

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone;CPU iPhone OS 9_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/601.1.46 (KHTML, like Gecko)Version/9.0 Mobile/13B143 Safari/601.1 (compatible; Baiduspider-render/2.0;+http://www.baidu.com/search/spider.html)

Baidu Desktop UA

Mozilla/5.0(compatible; Baiduspider/2.0; +http://www.baidu.com/search/spider.html)

Or

Mozilla/5.0(compatible; Baiduspider-render/2.0; +http://www.baidu.com/search/spider.html)

Baidu Applications UA

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone;CPU iPhone OS 9_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/601.1.46 (KHTML, like Gecko)Version/9.0 Mobile/13B143 Safari/601.1 (compatible; Baiduspider-render/2.0;Smartapp; +http://www.baidu.com/search/spider.html)

Step 2: Reverse look up the IP

Webmasters can find out if a spider is from Baidu by reverse looking up its IP. How to reverse look up the IP depends on your operating system. Below are the validation methods for 3 operating systems: Linux, Windows, and Mac OS.

Linux

In Linux, you can use the command host IP to reverse look up the spider. The hostname of Baidu spiders includes *.baidu.com or *.baidu.jp. If it doesn’t have this hostname, then the spider is not from Baidu. The below image shows 2 examples of Baidu spiders:

Windows

In Windows or IBM OS/2, you can use the command nslookup IP to reverse look up the spider. Open CMD and type in nslookup xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (IP). If the domain does not include *.baidu.com nor *.baidu.jp, then the spider is not from Baidu.

Mac

In Mac OS, you can use the command dig IP to reverse look up the spider. Open CMD and type in dig xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (IP). If the domain does not include *.baidu.com or *.baidu.jp, then the spider is not from Baidu.

***

Pro-tip: Another question we’re frequently asked is whether we can add the IPs of Baidu spiders to a crawling white list. Unfortunately, Baidu doesn’t provide their spiders with a constant IP, because the crawlers are dynamic.

Baidu Search Q&A: Content and character limits https://www.theegg.com/seo/china/baidu-search-qa-content-and-character-limits/ Mon, 20 Jan 2020 01:51:43 +0000 https://www.theegg.com/?p=30611 The post Baidu Search Q&A: Content and character limits appeared first on The Egg.

]]>

It’s normal for website owners to have myriad questions about Baidu and its limits on content and character lengths.

For example:

“I have a webpage on which the content is more than 3,000 lines and it includes Chinese and English characters. The Baidu snapshot and the text simulated through the crawl diagnostic tool shows as incomplete. Will this affect my website performance on Baidu? If so, how big is the impact?”

We broke this broad issue down into 4 practical Q&As—and confirmed their accuracy with Baidu engineers—to help you better understand Baidu and its content and character limits.

Q1: Does Baidu limit the length of webpage content?

A1: There is no limit to the length of the webpage content.

There is, however, a limit on the length of the source code. If the source code is too long, only the code that appears before the cut-off will be included.

At the time of publishing this article, we could not find any official documentation on the exact limit of the source code length. So, for now just bear in the mind that the simpler the source code, the better.

Q2: If the snapshot shows the page is incomplete, does that mean Baidu did not index the page properly?

A2: Not necessarily.

The snapshot generation is affected by many factors. And there are many reasons for an incomplete display. We cannot simply assume that it is not indexed correctly.

Q3: If the crawl diagnostic tool shows the page is incomplete, does that mean Baidu did not index the page properly?

A3: No.

The tool only shows the first 200KB of the page source code. When Baidu engineers designed the tool, they researched common webpage content sizes. Generally speaking, it would have been enough to show just the first 100KB, but they doubled that to be safe.

Q4: Does Baidu require any special characters on the webpage?

A4: No.

There is no such requirement. Baidu does not have any stipulations for special characters on the page.

Baidu and 360 Search: Reducing broken links and 404 pages https://www.theegg.com/seo/china/baidu-and-360-search-reducing-broken-links-and-404-pages/ Wed, 27 Nov 2019 08:41:59 +0000 https://www.theegg.com/?p=30439 The post Baidu and 360 Search: Reducing broken links and 404 pages appeared first on The Egg.

]]>

Many websites provide certain products or services that are only available for a limited amount of time.

And when that product or service expires, its landing page can generate a 404 error page.

The more 404 error pages that your site generates—and that are ultimately indexed by search engines—the lower the quality score and ultimately rankings your site receives. It follows then that you should reduce the number of indexed 404 pages to improve your quality score.

Here, we discuss how you can reduce the number of 404 pages indexed on your site using Baidu and 360 Search’s broken links submission tools.

Baidu and 360 Search: Using the broken links submission tool

Both Baidu and 360 Search provide a broken links submission tool. You can use this tool to submit your 404 pages, which prevents them from getting indexed.

There are 2 options for using Baidu’s broken links submission tool:

 1. Submit with a file: Essentially, you’ll create a file listing all your 404-page URLs and submit it to Baidu.
 2. Submit with a setting rule: If all the webpages under a particular category become 404 pages, then you can submit the pages as a batch.

360 Search provides only 1 option to submit the 404 pages: Submit with a file.

For both Baidu and 360 Search, you can follow the 5 steps below to submit your 404 pages with a file:

 1. Create a file that lists all the URLs of all your 404 pages. It should be in .txt or .xml format, no larger than 10MB, and with no more than 50,000 URLs. If you have more than 50,000 404 pages, or the file is larger than 10MB, please divide it into 2 or more files.
 2. Upload the file to your website. Make sure the file can be accessed via a browser, e.g., site.com/404page.txt.
 3. Log in to your Baidu Webmaster Tools or 360 Search Webmaster Tools.
 4. Access the Baidu broken links submission tool and/or the 360 Search broken links submission tool.
 5. Enter the URL(s) of the file(s) that lists all your 404 pages and click “提交” (submit).

Submit broken links in BaiduBaidu Broken Links Submission Tool

Submit broken links in 360360 Search Broken Links Submission Tool

On Baidu, to submit 404 pages with a setting rule, follow steps 3 and 4 above. And then:

1) Click “规则提交” to select “submit with a setting rule.”

Switch to submit with setting rule2) Enter the category name and click the blue button to submit.

Note: You can only submit once/month using the “submit with a setting rule” selection.

Baidu states that it will start to process the 404 pages 3 days after your submission. 360 Search does not provide any such timeline.

***

Once you’ve submitted your broken links, search engines will get working to remove your 404 pages from their databases, which improves your site quality and rankings, driving more traffic and ultimately clicks and conversions.

Below are 4 easy steps to verify your HTTPs site on Baidu.

 1. Access the HTTP verification page on the Baidu Search Source Platform:

2. Log in to your account:

3. Select the site you want to be verified:

To ensure successful verification, please make sure the things below have done before you start the verification.

 • Your Baidu account must be the website’s site owner or senior administrator.
 • All the pages of your website should have an HTTPs URL.
 • All HTTP URLs must be set as 301 redirects to their HTTPs counterparts.
